He has been the one who translates since he was nine years old.
Not occasionally. Structurally. Every appointment, every letter, every phone call with an institution, every conversation where somebody official needed to be understood. He was taken out of school for some of them. He learned words at eleven that most adults do not need.
And it is not a complaint, and I want to be careful here, because the moment this gets written as a grievance it becomes a different article and a worse one. His parents did not do anything wrong. They arrived somewhere with nothing and one of their children could do the thing that had to be done, and the family used what it had, which is what families do.
The cost is not visible and it is not dramatic. It is that a role that starts at nine tends to become the whole description, and by thirty a person can look around a room of people who love him and realize that what every single one of them means when they say his name is a function.
There is a promise in Revelation about a name that only two parties ever read.
The promise is deliberately private
Here is the verse, and every element of it is about a thing not being public.
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Revelation 2:17, King James Version)
The hidden manna. A white stone. A new name written. Which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Four private things in one sentence, and the last clause makes the privacy explicit rather than incidental. Nobody else gets to read it. Not the congregation, not the family, not the person who has an opinion about you.
That is a strange promise until you consider who it is being made to, and then it is exactly right. To somebody whose entire identity has been public and functional, the thing being offered is a name that no room has any access to and therefore no ability to overwrite.
You are given something no room can read or revise. Revelation 2:17 makes the privacy explicit in the verse itself, and it is by the Spirit, Romans 8:16, that the witness about a person is borne directly rather than through anybody's description.
A white stone was a verdict and an admission
The image would have been immediate to the people it was written to and it is worth recovering.
A white stone was used in that world in a couple of ways, and both are in play. It was the token dropped by a juror voting to acquit. It was also a token of admission, given to somebody entitled to be present at a feast.
So it is a verdict and it is an entry, in one object, and there is a name written on it that only the holder and the giver can read.
And notice what a token is not. It is not an announcement. It is not something a person waves. It is small and it is carried, and its whole function is that the holder has it on them.
You are holding a verdict and an admission in the same object. Revelation 2:17 gives the white stone with the name in it, and it is the Spirit who beareth witness, Romans 8:16, which is the same double function of a verdict and an entry.
What Scripture says about calling by name
If the promise seems abstract, the Old Testament makes the same point in the plainest terms.
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
I have called thee by thy name. Not by tribe, not by function, not by usefulness.
And there is a second one that is directly about a new name being given by God.
And thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. (Isaiah 62:2)
Which the mouth of the LORD shall name. The naming right, in a family, is the deepest one there is. Whoever names a person has said something about what that person is for, and a child named for a role by circumstance has been named by an accident.
Here the naming is being done by somebody with authority to do it and knowledge to do it well.
You are named by the mouth of the LORD rather than by circumstance. Isaiah 62:2 puts the naming in His mouth, and it is by the Spirit of adoption, Romans 8:15, that a person belongs to the household where that naming happens.
The shepherd calls them by name and not by count
There is a line in John that says the same thing about ordinary daily practice.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. (John 10:3)
By name. Not by number, which is how anybody would actually manage a flock. The image is deliberately impractical, which is the point.
And leadeth them out, which is a movement. Being called by name is attached, in that verse, to being taken somewhere, and a person who has only ever been a function in a room has usually not been led anywhere by anybody; they have been deployed.
You are called by name by Somebody who then leads rather than deploys. John 10:3 attaches the naming to the leading out, and it is by the Spirit, Romans 8:14, that as many as are led are called the sons of God.
What this does not ask of anybody
I want to say the guardrail plainly, because this article could be misread badly.
Nothing here asks anybody to stop translating. The appointments still need doing and the letters still need reading and the older ones still cannot do it, and a man who reads this and stops has not been freed, he has abandoned people who need him and he will know it.
What is being offered is not an exit from the role. It is that the role is not the name, and that there is a name, and that it is written somewhere no family gathering can get at.
And it is worth saying that if being a function has become heavier than tiredness, if it has reached the point where you feel you are only wanted for what you do and are not sure you want to be here, that is a thing to say out loud to a doctor, a counselor, a social worker, or a pastor you trust. In the United States the 988 crisis line is answered by a real person at any hour.
You are able to keep the role and know it is not the name. Revelation 2:17 gives the name privately rather than instead of anything, and it is by the Spirit, Romans 8:16, that a person knows what they are called where nobody can read it.
So say one true sentence out loud about what you actually believe, in your own words.
Job title my family calls me by, you are not my name. Revelation 2:17 promises a new name which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it, and it is by the Spirit, Romans 8:16, that the witness about a person is borne directly.
You are named by the mouth of the LORD rather than by an accident of circumstance. Isaiah 62:2 puts the naming right in His mouth, and it is by the Spirit of adoption, Romans 8:15, that the household in which that naming happens is yours.
I am not going to tell you the family starts seeing you differently. They may not, and the man in the parable has not shown anybody the page in the drawer, including his daughter.
What is settled is that He hath called thee by thy name, and thou art mine (Isaiah 43:1), and it is by His Spirit rather than by anybody's description that the calling is done.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over this is genuinely yours, given to you and never invented. A promise was made of a name written on a stone that only two parties will ever read, so speak to the job title you have carried since you were nine: you have standing to address it because He promised a name no room can revise. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own opinion, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Revelation 2:17 and Isaiah 43:1 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not what anybody calls you at that table, that makes saying it a receiving.
- Job title my family calls me by, you are not my name. The Word of God says, a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it, and the privacy is stated in the verse itself.
- Sense of being wanted only for what I do, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am called by name and led out, because John 10:3 attaches the naming to the leading, and by His Spirit I am led rather than deployed.
- Abba, You have redeemed me and called me by my name, and Isaiah 43:1 says thou art mine at the end of it. I receive the name You have written today, and I am saying one true sentence out loud about what I actually believe, in my own words.
