They Checked an Apostle and Luke Wrote Down That It Made Them Noble

The sentence that ends the conversation, every time, is not an argument. It is a tone.

Somebody asks where a thing comes from, and the answer arrives as a small change of temperature in the room, and what it communicates is: that question is disrespectful. Nobody says the word disrespect. They do not have to. The temperature says it and everybody at the table hears it, including the four year old with the bread.

And a young person learns from that, very fast, that the price of asking is that a good man's face goes still, and after two or three of those he simply stops.

I want to say what I believe is actually happening in that moment, because I do not think it is contempt. I think it is fear. Most of the older ones in this community were formed in a place where a question in the wrong room was genuinely dangerous, and the reflex that keeps a family safe under a suspicious government does not switch off because the family has moved.

But the reflex is not the truth, and Scripture is not neutral about this. There is a town in Acts where an entire congregation fact checked the apostle Paul, and Luke wrote down what he thought of them for doing it.

Luke calls them noble and says why

Paul is run out of Thessalonica and arrives in Berea, and what happens there gets one of the warmest sentences in the whole book of Acts.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11, King James Version)

More noble. That is Luke's assessment, written down, preserved, read out in churches for two thousand years, about people who went home and checked an apostle.

Not more difficult. Not less submitted. Not a problem the leadership had to manage. More noble, and the reason given is precisely the checking.

You are not being difficult when you look it up, and Scripture has a word for what you are doing. Acts 17:11 calls it noble in as many words, and it is the Spirit of truth, John 16:13, who is described as guiding into truth, which is the same activity with a different name.

The order of the two verbs is the whole thing

Now look at the sequence in the verse, because it is what separates a Berean from a cynic, and it is the difference the older generation is genuinely worried about.

They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily.

The receiving is first. They were not looking for a way out. They had already decided to take it seriously, and the searching was the shape their seriousness took, and it happened daily, which is a word about appetite rather than about suspicion.

A man who checks in order to escape has a different verb order. He searches first and receives nothing, and everybody can tell, and that man is what the older ones have seen before and are frightened of seeing again.

So the answer to the accusation is not an argument, it is a posture, and the posture is visible over about two years. Ready to receive, and looking it up, in that order, daily.

You have both motions available to you at once, and they were never opposites. Acts 17:11 puts receiving and searching in one sentence about the same people, and it is by the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 2:12, that the things freely given are known rather than merely accepted.

Paul told a whole church to do it to him

If you think Berea was tolerated rather than commanded, read what Paul writes to another congregation.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

Prove all things. Test them. And the letter that contains that instruction is a letter from Paul, which means he is telling a church to test what he himself is sending them.

And John says it even more directly.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)

Try the spirits. Addressed to ordinary believers. Not to a committee, not to the qualified, not to the leadership. The New Testament repeatedly hands the ordinary Christian both the responsibility and the permission to test, which would be a very strange thing to do if testing were an act of rebellion.

You have been given the responsibility, and it was handed to ordinary people on purpose. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 and 1 John 4:1 both address whole congregations, and it is the anointing, 1 John 2:27, described as teaching you, which is the Spirit given rather than a permission granted by a room.

The Proverbs version is not a cold word

There is a picture of this in Proverbs that is worth putting beside Acts 17, because it removes the last bit of suspicion around the word searching.

Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:3-5)

Criest after. Liftest up thy voice. Seekest her as silver. Those are hot verbs. There is nothing detached in them.

And look where the searching lands: then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD. The searching produces reverence rather than dissolving it, which is the exact opposite of what everybody at that table is afraid of.

That has been my experience and I will say it plainly. Every single thing I have gone and checked has left me with more fear of God than I had before, not less. The things that got smaller were never Him.

You are searching toward the fear of the LORD and not away from it. Proverbs 2:5 names that as the result of the searching, and it is the Spirit of the LORD, Isaiah 11:2, who is described as the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD, which puts both on the same side.

What checking is not

Let me draw the line honestly, because the fear in that room is not baseless and I am not going to pretend it is.

Checking is not a hobby of finding fault. A man who examines only what he wants to be free of, and never examines the things he likes, is not searching, he is shopping, and everybody around him can see it inside a year.

Checking is also not a private enterprise. The Bereans did it together, daily, in the open, and they stayed. Nobody in Acts 17 went off alone with a grievance and came back with a system.

And checking is not the same as ruling. There are things I have looked at for years and still do not know, and I keep doing most of them, and I have decided that a man who cannot live with an open question was never going to be helped by an answer.

You are able to hold an open question without it becoming a wedge. Acts 17:11 has a whole congregation doing exactly this while staying in the room, and it is the same Spirit, Ephesians 4:3, by whom the bond of peace is kept during it.
