The Nightly Audit and the Verse That Cancels It

It happens in the last twenty minutes of the day and almost nobody has ever described it out loud.

The lights are off. The house is quiet. And a review begins, without being started, and it goes through the day looking for anything.

A tone used with somebody at four in the afternoon. A thing said about a cousin. A thought that arrived and stayed longer than it should have. A prayer intended and not prayed. And each item gets weighed, briefly, against a total that has no visible number on it, and then the next item comes.

Some nights the review comes out roughly even and sleep arrives. Some nights it does not, and a person lies there running a fourteen year old memory that has no business being in a Tuesday.

Nobody taught anybody to do this. It is not a discipline anybody in that congregation would recommend. It simply installed itself somewhere around eleven years old and has been running every night since, and the person doing it usually assumes it is what conscience is.

There is a sentence in Titus that describes the actual arrangement, and every verb in it belongs to somebody else.

He names the phrase precisely

Here is the sentence, and it is worth reading slowly because it is built like a legal instrument.

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. (Titus 3:4-5, King James Version)

Not by works of righteousness which we have done.

Look at what is being excluded there. Not bad works. Not failures. Works of righteousness, which is to say the good ones, the ones that would look best on the ledger, the ones a careful person would want counted.

Those are the ones named and set aside. Which means the nightly review is auditing a column that was never part of the calculation, in either direction.

You are running an audit on a column that was excluded by name. Titus 3:5 says not by works of righteousness which we have done, and it is the Holy Ghost, named in the same verse as doing the renewing, who is the mechanism rather than a person's record.

Every verb belongs to God

Now watch who is doing what in the rest of the sentence.

He saved us. By the washing. And renewing of the Holy Ghost. Which he shed on us abundantly.

Four movements and not one of them has a human subject. The person in the sentence is entirely on the receiving end, and the only thing they contribute is the state they were in beforehand.

And then the outcome, in verse 7:

That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7)

Heirs. Not employees. An employee's position depends on this month's performance, and the review in the dark is exactly the mechanism of an employee checking whether they will still have a job tomorrow. An heir's position depends on a birth.

You are an heir rather than an employee, and the position rests on a birth. Titus 3:7 says heirs according to the hope of eternal life, and it is the Holy Ghost shed abundantly, verse 6, who is named as what was given rather than what was earned.

Hebrews states it in a tense that ends the argument

If the nightly review needs one sentence aimed straight at it, it is this one, and the tense is the whole thing.

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14)

Hath perfected. Completed action. For ever. Duration. By one offering. Quantity, and the quantity is one.

Now put that beside a nightly review. A review only makes sense if the total is still moving. If the total was set by one offering and fixed for ever, then the review is not producing information; it is producing anxiety and calling it diligence.

I want to be careful here, because there is such a thing as examining yourself and Scripture commands it. But the examination Scripture commands is aimed at repentance and at the next step, and it takes about four minutes and it ends. The thing running in the dark does not end and is not aimed at anything, and the two are not the same activity even though they use the same equipment.

You are perfected for ever by one offering, and the total is not moving. Hebrews 10:14 says it in a completed tense, and it is the Holy Ghost who is called to witness about it four verses later, Hebrews 10:15, which puts the Spirit's testimony directly against the review.

What the psalm actually says about sleep

There is a verse people put on cards, and its second half is a claim about who is doing the securing.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8)

Thou, LORD, only. The word only is doing the work. Not primarily. Not mostly. Only, which means the review is not contributing to the safety even on the nights when it comes out even.

That is worth saying plainly to somebody who has been doing this for twenty years, because the review has always felt like a contribution. It feels like the responsible thing. And the verse says the safety has one source and that a man lying in the dark grinding through his own day is not adding anything to it.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3)

Stayed on thee. Not stayed on the day just finished. The peace is described as following the direction a mind is pointed, and that is a thing a person can actually do something about at eleven at night.

You are kept in safety by One who does it only, and the review adds nothing to it. Psalm 4:8 puts the word only in the middle of that sentence, and it is by the Spirit, Romans 8:6, that to be spiritually minded is described as life and peace.

What to do at eleven at night

Practical, because a doctrine that cannot be used at eleven at night is not much help at eleven at night.

The review does not respond to being argued with. Anybody who has tried to reason with it knows this: it simply produces another item. It has an unlimited supply and a person has finite attention, and it wins every time on stamina.

What it does respond to, in my experience and in the experience of people I have watched, is being answered out loud with something that is not about the day at all.

Say one sentence of Scripture, out loud, into the dark, about what He has done. Not about what you did. The review is a conversation about your record, and the only move available is to change the subject to His, and that is not a trick, it is what Titus 3:5 does grammatically in the middle of its own sentence: not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy.

You are able to change the subject rather than win the argument. Titus 3:5 pivots on the word but and moves the whole sentence off a person's record, and it is the Holy Ghost, named in that same verse, who does the renewing rather than a person out-arguing themselves.
