The Older Brother Was Not Wrong About Anything He Said

She has never missed anything, and she cannot relax in a room where God is.

Those two facts sit next to each other in her and have done for years. She was baptized at seventeen. She teaches the children on the second and fourth Sunday. She has never once been the subject of a conversation and she never will be.

And when she prays, there is a small tightening somewhere behind her sternum that she has never mentioned to anybody, because she is not sure how you would describe it without sounding either dramatic or ungrateful.

She has done everything right. She would not put it that way out loud, but she has, by any standard anybody in that building would use.

It has never once produced the thing she thought it would produce. She assumed at some point there would be a settledness. There is not. There is a checking, every day, and a quiet arithmetic she has never written down, and the arithmetic never comes out.

He is not wrong about anything he says

Everybody knows the younger son. The parable does not end with him.

The older brother comes in from the field, hears music, finds out what has happened, and refuses to go in. And when his father comes out, he says this:

Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. (Luke 15:29, King James Version)

Now read that carefully, because of what is not in it.

Jesus does not put one false sentence in that speech. The man really has served for years. He really has not transgressed the commandment. Nobody in the story contradicts a word of it, and the father does not begin by correcting him.

He is not a rebel. He never was. He is the one who stayed.

And what he has is not freedom and not joy. What he has is a ledger and a grievance, and the grievance is that the ledger has never paid out.

You are not being told your obedience was the mistake. Luke 15:29 does not put one false sentence in that man's mouth and the father never corrects the record, and it is His Spirit who separates the record from the ache without dismissing either.

The father comes out to him as well

Here is the sentence in that parable that almost nobody quotes.

Therefore came his father out, and intreated him. (Luke 15:28)

He came out. Twice in the same chapter this father leaves the house and goes to a son: once running down the road, and once out into the yard in the middle of his own party.

And then he says the thing that answers the arithmetic:

Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. (Luke 15:31)

Ever with me. All that I have is thine.

That was true the whole time. It was true during every one of those years of serving. Nothing in that sentence was being withheld pending performance, and the son had been standing in the middle of it, working, and had not known.

You have been standing in the middle of what you were trying to earn. Luke 15:31 has the father saying all that I have is thine to the son who never left, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a better year who makes that something a person can rest in.

Why He chose you, stated by Him

If you want to know what the basis actually was, God says it, and the answer is almost circular on purpose.

The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you. (Deuteronomy 7:7-8)

But because the LORD loved you.

That is the whole reason. He does not point to anything about them. He rules out the obvious candidate, size, and then gives a reason that is only about Himself.

And Paul says the same thing about how it works now:

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us. (Titus 3:5)

You were loved before you had done a single thing right, and He gave no other reason. Deuteronomy 7:8 and Titus 3:5 both put the reason entirely on His side, and it is His Spirit who moves that from something a person believes about doctrine to something they believe about themselves.

Both halves, in one paragraph

And here is the verse that holds the whole thing together, and most people only ever get the first half of it.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

That is the half everybody knows.

Read the next verse, because it is the one that saves this from turning into indifference:

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

Created unto good works.

So the works are not deleted. They are relocated. They are not what buys the standing; they are what the standing was made for, and they were prepared in advance for you to walk in.

Which means everything you have done was never wasted and was never wrong. It was simply never the payment, and it was never being weighed.

You are His workmanship, and the works were prepared before you got to them. Ephesians 2:10 puts them after the gift rather than in front of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person keep the second half without going back to using it as currency.

Assurance is described as something given

The last piece is this. Scripture does not treat certainty as something you deduce from your own performance.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)

That ye may know. John says knowing is the reason he wrote.

And Paul describes where the settledness comes from:

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption... The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:15-16)

Beareth witness with our spirit. It is described as a second voice agreeing with yours, and it is not your own conclusion about your own record.

You are not required to produce your own assurance. Romans 8:16 names who does it, and it is the same Spirit rather than your arithmetic who beareth witness in you.
