Three Words at the Front of Romans 8 and One of Them Is Now

He is not in trouble with anybody.

That is worth establishing first, because it is what makes this so hard to describe. He has not done anything. There is no scandal in his life, no secret, nothing anybody would be shocked by. He is, by the ordinary standards of that congregation, one of the good ones, and has been since he was small.

And there is a hum.

It is there when he wakes up. It is there when he is driving. It goes quiet occasionally, for an hour, usually when he is doing something useful, and it comes back the moment he sits down. It is not loud enough to be a crisis and it never has been, which is exactly why he has never mentioned it to anybody in thirty years.

If you made him put it into words he would say it sounds like: not quite. Not quite right with God. Not quite done. Not quite safe.

And he has done everything. That is the part I want to be careful about, because a lot of people hear a description like that and assume the man needs to repent of something. He has repented of everything he can find, repeatedly, and the hum did not move, and the reason it did not move is that it was never listening to any of that.

The chapter before it ends in a shout

You cannot read Romans 8:1 properly without the sentence in front of it, because the word therefore is pointing at something.

Paul has spent the back half of Romans 7 describing a man tearing himself apart over exactly this. Not a rebel. A man who loves the law of God and cannot make himself do it.

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 7:24-25, King James Version)

Who shall deliver me. Notice the shape of the question. Not: how do I get better. Not: what should I try next. Who. He has already concluded that the answer is a person and not a method.

And then the answer arrives as thanks rather than as an instruction, which tells you it was already done before the question was asked.

You are asking a question Scripture answers with a Person rather than with a program. Romans 7:24 asks who rather than how, and it is the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, named two verses later in Romans 8:2, who is given as the answer rather than a stricter method.

Therefore is pointing backwards on purpose

Now the sentence.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

Therefore. It is a conclusion word. It means what follows is being derived from what came before, and what came before was a man at the end of himself thanking God for a deliverance he did not perform.

So the no-condemnation is not a reward for having got somewhere. It is a consequence of something already established. It sits downstream of the cross and upstream of everything a person does afterward.

That reordering is the whole battle. Almost everybody raised the way I was raised has the sentence in the other order: do the things, and then, eventually, no condemnation. Paul has it as: no condemnation, therefore, and then a whole chapter about how a person then lives.

You are downstream of something already finished rather than upstream of something still owed. Romans 8:1 opens with therefore and derives it from Romans 7:25, and it is the Spirit, Romans 8:2, whose law of life is described as what freed a person rather than their own progress.

The word now is doing something specific

Then the second word, and it is the one that answers the hum directly.

There is therefore now.

Not eventually. Not at the end. Not once the process is complete or once the record is clean or once this year has been better than last year. Now, which is the tense the hum has never been able to work in.

Because the hum operates entirely on incompleteness. It does not accuse a person of a crime; it tells them they are not finished. And a person cannot argue with that, because it is true. Nobody is finished. So the hum wins every conversation it has ever had, right up until somebody points out that the verdict was never scheduled for the end.

You are not waiting on a verdict, and the timing of it was settled in one word. Romans 8:1 says now in the middle of the sentence, and it is by His Spirit, Romans 8:16, that the witness of belonging is borne today rather than issued later.

Where the condemnation actually went

It is worth saying where it went, because a sentence that only says there is none can feel like a technicality.

And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight. (Colossians 1:21-22)

Unreproveable in his sight. Not: overlooked. Not: excused pending review. Unreproveable, which means there is nothing available to bring, and in his sight, which is the only sight that determines anything.

And there is the now again, in verse 22, doing the same work it does in Romans 8.

That is the answer to a man who has been repenting of the same thing every night for eleven years hoping it will eventually take. The reason it never takes is not that his repentance is inadequate. It is that he is trying to produce, by repeating, a status that was already given whole.

You have been presented unreproveable, and the presenting was done by Him. Colossians 1:22 says holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight, and it is His Spirit, Ephesians 1:13, by whom a person is sealed, which is a word about a thing already settled and kept.

The Spirit's job includes telling you this

And then Paul says something about the Holy Spirit that is directly aimed at the hum, and I did not notice it for years because I was reading the chapter for other reasons.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:15-16)

Not the spirit of bondage again to fear. He rules out, by name, the exact atmosphere the hum runs on.

And then the positive job: beareth witness with our spirit. There is a testimony being given, continuously, about who a person belongs to, and it is being given by God about them rather than being generated by them about themselves.

Which means the hum is not the only voice in there, and it is not the authoritative one, and the reason it has felt authoritative is that it has been running unopposed since childhood.

You have a witness inside you that was given specifically to say this. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, and it is the Holy Spirit named in that verse doing it rather than a person managing to believe hard enough.
